ECHO

Welcome to the Quiltmaker 100 Blocks Volume 11 Blog Hop!

If you're not hopping yet, get thee to Quilty Pleasures right away to find out what's going on.   Don't miss out on giveaways, quilt ideas, fun stuff, giveaways, more fun and more giveaways!

I am so honored and pleased to have my block, ECHO, in Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 11.   It is listed on page 36 as Block 1049.  This is only the second time I've submitted a block and also the second time I've participated in this blog hop!  So exciting!  It's also a bit nerve-wracking to be on the Hop on the very first day!!  But, here we go....
I thought it would be fun to see what this block would look like in different fabrics.  So, the first thing I did is to change the background to dramatic black!

Those bright colors really become brighter on a black background, don't they?

Next, I wanted to see it with reproductions.  Here's a black and tan version that looks like it was made in 1890!

Are you loving a particular version yet?  How about a soft modern look?
Did you notice I changed the value placement in the soft modern version?  It makes the diagonals look more prominent.

Last but not the least, here is a traditional version that's just a touch patriotic. I did several things different about this block.   First, I mixed batiks and regular cottons.  I have been doing that more and more these days.  You can, too!  The quilt police won't come after you for mixing them up.  I promise! Second, the color for the arcs and the circle in contrast to the red/blue really pops those arcs and circle.  Finally, I just love the transparency between the red and the blue in this one.  These 3 fabrics just blend and transition so well!

Making the blocks in different colorways is one thing.  But, really, how would they look in a quilt?

So, I designed a 30" square wallhanging with a special sashing strip that creates a secondary pattern for a more cohesive look.  Check out the different looks:

So, which one is your favorite colorway?  Tell me in a comment below and you will be entered in a drawing for a copy of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 11!    This prize will come from Quiltmaker directly.

Even better, in your comment below, include your favorite quilting tip and you will be entered in a drawing for a copy of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol 11 AND a fat quarter bundle of yummy fabrics from Quilting Treasures.   These fabrics are from the Color Blends collection with which I designed the Surf and Sand Block of the Month program.    I will be sending this prize bundle out.

You will find a link at the top of this blog (and on the right-hand side column) for quick directions to make the quilt above - especially those sashing strips.  However, these directions are intended for the more experienced quilter who knows how to make flying geese units, hour glass units and make circle appliques.  You can substitute a yo-yo for the circle applique, by the way.

Just one more - here's Echo in a table runner.

Have fun Hopping onto the other blogs!  Back to the Blog Hop...

  1. Gina, love your block. My favorite color choice is the neutral mainly because the sashing looks so different in the wallhanging. I also like the patriotic version.

  3. Just love the soft modern look very much! My favourite quilting tip is to have always enough thread filled bobbins at your hand. Just hate it when I run out of thread while sewing.Lol!

  4. Si like your block in the bright on black version. My quilting tip is: ALWAYS remove the throat plate end take out the bobbin housing every time you put in a new bobbin. There may not be so much fluff in there this time, but this way ther never is!

  7. Cool block. I like the patriotic colorway the best. My favorite quilting tip is to square up your blocks. I didn't do this starting out & had difficulty getting seams to match up. Thanks.

  8. Love the repros probably best of all. And the chain piecing was probably my best find of all. It was a duh moment.

  9. I love the traditional, patriotic colorway. My quilting tip is to set your workspace up in a U shape. You can easily and quickly move from one area to another.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I love the traditional colorway the best. My tip is just to stay organized as you lay out your quilt pattern (I do it on a bed usually) and I pin on numbered paper squares to help remind me of where things go.

  11. The black and tan colorway is my favorite for sure. -- soparkaveataoldotcom

  12. This is what I love about 100 Blocks issues -- there's always great blocks that show me interesting new design ideas! I love this block for the new take/setting for the Drunkard's Path unit. My favorites are the soft modern and traditional colorings because the fabrics you used added a transparency effect to them. Love it!

  13. My favorite is the bright on white, it's beautiful! I don't know if it's my favorite, but a good tip is never sew stitches smaller than you can rip out, LOL. It's so true.

My favorite is your modern version with green and blue, I think its gorgeous! My tip is to square up units as you are completing a block. There will be fewer headaches later!

  20. It is so helpful to see the different color option placements and the quilt layouts. I really like the brown and tan block. If your sewing machine foot is moving around on your floor, put a mouse pad underneath the foot peddle and this will stop the movement. Thank you for being a part of the QM's 100 Volume 11 blog tour and the chance to win a copy of this awesome magazine.

  22. I'm a fan of bright print but n this case I love the reproduction block. Can't wait to get my copy so I can make it.

  23. I like the red, blue, tan combination. Tip: Use a bamboo (kabob) stick when pressing seams open for bias stems in applique.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I really like the black and tan version. When starting a new project always double check your 1/4" seam allowance to make sure it is accurate. poladydwd(at)yahoo(dot)com

  26. 1) I'm liking the red and blues colorway the best.

    2) A quilting tip: Your life would be so much easier to make a design wall or board. I love mine and there are a kajillion ways to make one over the internet -- just find the one that fits your needs! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I like the first version with the bright colors and white background--good colorway for summer!

Quilting tip: measure twice, cut once. And don't be afraid that the quilt won't be perfect--just do it and get it done! That one really, really helped me a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love the pink and yellow on the white background the best.

Quilting tip: When quilting on a domestic machine, wear the gloves designed for it. They save a lot of strain on your shoulders and back. Also sit plenty high and eat some chocolate!

    ReplyDelete
  29. My favorite is #3, the blue and green. It was my least favorite when I looked at only the block, but I really like the way 4 blocks looked. Quilt tip: A slider on the machine bed makes free-motion quilting so much less stress free.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Great block! I think my favorite is the soft modern look. Thanks so much for the chance to win :)
Hmm - a quilting tip - I feel too new to quilting to give tips, but my tip to myself is always to keep going - even though it's not perfect!

  32. I love the block. My favorite is the traditional w/ a little patriotic. I love those colors together. My quilting tip is as long as you are having fun, it does not matter if your quilt is perfect, remember no one is perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I like the Red, blue and tan best. I like to pre-wind several bobbins before a project.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I like them all, can't pick just one!

  35. I like the reproduction look. My tip: don't wear your shoulders as earring. Relax. Get up and stretch often.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love number 3 colorway. For myself, my tip is read, read, read the directions again....I tend to look and the photos and skip the instructions....:(

    ReplyDelete
  37. Love the black and tan! Tip: read the pattern! Multiple times!!!! And really LOOK at the photo vs the fabric just in case you need to be pattern matching!

    ReplyDelete
  38. This is a gorgeous block that will work with a lot of different fabrics. Thank you so much for sharing the design!
My quilting tip is probably slow down and do it right the first time ;-)
Thank you for participating in the blog hop for Quiltmaker.

  39. I liked the reproduction fabric version. I really appreciate that you explained the impact of different colourways on the design of the block.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I like the brights (yellow, orange) with the white background!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love the modern look with the greens and Browns beautiful. My tip is to use toe separators to hold your bobbins so they don't unroll on you. The ones they use for pedicures.

    ReplyDelete
  42. First thank you for the different colorways; I love visuals! My favorite, although tough to choose, is the reproductions colorway. My tip is to relax and take your time...rushing leads to ripping out or redoing! Melissa adyldrop@yahoo.com

  43. I really love the first, original version. It's bright and slightly intimidating. :0 Not sure I am capable of that but would love to do it. Not always a bright lover, but this one really appeals to me. I recently discovered that I have always pieced with too long a stitch. So my tip would be, shorten those stitches for piecing...it'll result in more secure seams and a much better look. Thanks!

  44. Hi, I´m a 100 block tourist and I like string piecing. I learn a lot of amqrican quilt blocks.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I like the last one, the gold and red and blue. My tip is to remember, it's your quilt, do it the way you want to.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lovely block! I enjoy seeing the color variations, the one with the dark background is my very favorite. My tip is to use a wooden wallpaper seam roller for "finger pressing". Very quick and works great.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The patriotic grabs me! Not usually something I am drawn to, which says ALOT about the design of the block - soooo inviting! TIP: use rubber shelf liner under your machine, for those marathon free motion quilting sessions - keeps the machine from slipping, sliding and jumping around!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I usually go for bright colors on a black background but this time I have to say it's the one with the patriotic look. My tip for beginners is "Measure twice cut once". Yes, I learned the hard way.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Favorite is the bright with the white background. The sashing strips make the block sing. My tip is to develop a scrap management system that will work for you.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I really like the tan/white/black colorway. My favorite tip is the saying "Done is better than perfect".

    ReplyDelete
  51. Great block. all are nice, but I am partial to the red and blue. My tip: be sure to change the presser foot when switching to a decorative stitch!!! (Yes, even after 40 yrs of sewing, I got in a hurry and forgot!).

    ReplyDelete
  52. Great block. all are nice, but I am partial to the red and blue. My tip: be sure to change the presser foot when switching to a decorative stitch!!! (Yes, even after 40 yrs of sewing, I got in a hurry and forgot!).

    ReplyDelete
  53. That is an amazing block and I like the pink and yellow one, thanks for showing all the variations as I love to see the possibilities.
My tip is to make sure your printer settings are set correctly when printing patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Congratulations on your block! All the color variations are interesting, but my favorite is the red and yellow on a light background. It is so bright and cheerful. My tip: After cutting and pressing binding, roll it on an empty cardboard tube to prevent tangling as you sew it to the quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I love reproduction fabrics, so I appreciate seeing the different versions of your amazing block! I especially like how it looks in the table runner.
My tip: Use your phone to take pictures of different layout--helps to get a different perspective on your quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love the yellow, pink and orange colorway the best.

My tip. Use a clover clip when you begin basting down the fabric on your EPP shapes. Works well to hold the fabric taught for that first stitch. Also, if the hex is 1" or smaller, I don't baste through the paper; I just tack each corner.
Planning to try glue basting next time with dissolvable applique paper inside.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I love your bright colorway most - looks really modern :) As for a sewing tip - I always write down little things I've changed about a pattern or ways to make it better next time in a notebook. I used to think I'd remember for next time I made it but I never did and ended up making the same mistakes every time! This way works much better :) x

  58. wow congratulations. your Echo is wonderful. I really love the one in bright colors on a white back ground.
My favorite quilting tip is: measure TWICE, cut ONCE.
cant tell you how much fabric I threw into the scrap bin until I learned this trick. It has helped a lot. Thanks for sharing and for a chance to win

  59. think that I like the traditional look as it just pops out at me more. Nice to have all of the different ways to use your wonderful block. I think that my tip is one that I have to use all the time...take a break from the machine and walk around once in a while and if you start making mistakes...walk away and start again tomorrow...it saves the project and your sanity! Hard to do but it works!

    ReplyDelete
  60. My favorite is the pinks, oranges, and yellows on the black background. It really makes the center design pop. My tip is to use a rotating cutting mat to square up your block. With it you won't have to move the block, just the ruler.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I like the Bright block with pinks and yellows. Tip - get a tiny hook crochet hook, it is great for grabbing thread, cleaning tight spots(iron holes), turning fabric and so many things. 24Tangent@gmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  62. I like the red/yellows/oranges on the black background! Love the pop of colors! Don't be to picky over what you think are mess ups...almost always no one even see's it but you. We are our own worst critics!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I like the pink and yellow one the best, but they're all beautiful. My favorite tip is to take a deep breath and just go for it!! (I tend to over think things and become afraid to make a mistake)

    ReplyDelete
  64. My tip is to slow down and aim for accuracy without making yourself crazy. Enjoy the process. I can see where the name Echo is perfect for your block; looks great.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Here's one that works for me: if you're having with your thread when you're piecing, re-thread your machine. Still having tension trouble? Re-thread it again. Don't mess with the dials, just re-thread it a few times. That almost always solves the problem without causing new ones.

    ReplyDelete
  66. My favourite colourway is the soft modern. Congratulations have having your block in the magazine. My quilting tip is that we shouldn't be so hard on ourselves to get everything perfect when we're quilting. Just quilt!

    wlinda_ca at yahoo dot com

    ReplyDelete
  67. I love the pink and yellow. It reminds me of strawberry lemonade. Yummy! My best tip is to use beeswax on your thread when hand sewing to tame your thread.

    ReplyDelete
  68. What a great block design! I love the pink and yellow on the light background. My tip is when making a pieced border to add a row of stay stitching around the edge to keep the seams from popping during the quilting process.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Great block! I found I liked your modern version the most. My tip -- Always keep your scissors at the same place when sitting at your sewing machine. Nancy A: rangerer@sbcglobal.net

    ReplyDelete
  70. I love the original colours of pink/yellow/white. It reminds me of summer, and I'm so ready for warmer weather :) My tip is to use a self-threading needle to hide all the threads as you fmq, that way when you take the quilt off the table, you're done!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. My favorite colorway is the black /tan and cream one. I love neutral blocks!

My hint: Always have a project pinned and ready to be sewn at the machine. I get lots more sewing done when it's ready for machine work.

    ReplyDelete
  72. My favorite colorway is the first one, the pink, red & yellow on the light background.
My hint: Prewind as many bobbins as you can before starting a project. It's so nice to have them prewound. cknapp3626@sbcglobal.net

    ReplyDelete
  73. My favorite colorways is the pink and yellow one. I love how your block looks different each time, with a different colorway. Favorite quilting tip, use sharp needles and rotary blades.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I like the green and blue. Favourite quilting tip: keep your area tidy!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I like the tan one the best. Loved reading all these tips! Mine just do it, you'll never learn if you don't try. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  76. You know, I think I like the traditional color way the best...maybe it's the value placement. But, your block looks great each way you made it up :o) My best quilting tip is learn to master the 1/4" seam...it really does make a difference. Thanks so much for a chance to win :o)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Fantastic block! Using a Mr Clean "Magic Eraser" to clean the bottom of an iron.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I like the black and tan best.
Tip: Buy your fabric at estate sales!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I like the original pink, yellow, and white version--so cheerful.
My hint is string piece whenever possible, which also means have everything cut out and in order before you start.

    ReplyDelete
  80. All the different versions of your block look great. I think I like the last combination best. My tip is to change your machine needle frequently; it can make a big difference.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Such interesting variations! I really like the black background one - it is so striking!
My tip is to chain piece when possible - it really speeds piecing up.

    ReplyDelete
  82. The traditional look with the red and blue speaks to me. My tip is before free motion quilting a large project to make a small block using the fabrics in it so you can audition either the thread or a new quilting design. Doing this can save time(not having to rip out hated thread or design) and I use those small blocks as mug rugs!

    ReplyDelete
  83. I love your blog! It looks great in every color collection! My favorite quilting tip is to clean the sewing room between each project. I can't say I always follow this advice though :). But I find that when I do, I have more motivation to sew and more efficiency in doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I really love the blue, green and grey! Cute block!

    ReplyDelete
  85. My favorite colorway is the green/aqua/gray although I really like this block in all the colorways. Great block ... thanks for sharing ... :) Pat

    ReplyDelete
  86. I like the third and fourth quilt designs because the secondary design in the center really pops for me on these two.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I like the brights on the white background and the soft modern block. Love the runner!
My tip...keep a stash of chocolate in your sewing room.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I like the first one (reds and pinks with the white backgound) and the red/blue.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Cool block. I like the green and blue block.

    ReplyDelete
  90. My tip is to clean up your sewing room after each day of sewing. Makes it much nicer to sew the next day.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Cool block. I like the green and blue block.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I love the patriotic version. When cutting pieces for a quilt I use lots of plastic bags of various sizes to sort my cut pieces. I put a note in each bag with size, # of pieces, piece letter or #, and anything else to help keep me organized.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I like the first 2 colorways and then the tan & black. Great block. Thanks for sharing and the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  96. Beautiful! My favorite is the last one, the red and blue one. Chain piece!

    ReplyDelete

  99. So fun to see your block in all the different colorways. I like the top one in bright colors with a white background. My favorite quilting tip will always be measure twice and cut once.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Love your block! I like bright colors! My hint is to prewash your fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  101. What a fun block! I like the original design best, with the bright colors on the light background. My hint is to use high quality fabrics and thread, I love the feel of a good-quality fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I like the first colorway best--it looks so nice and springy. Love how you set the blocks together! My favorite tip is the old measure twice, cut once, but with the added tip to recheck what size you are supposed to be cutting as well. Thanks for the chance to win!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I love the soft modern look! So pretty! Congrats on such a great block! Tip for quilting - remember to replace your needle before you start a new big quilt project! thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  104. It's hard to pick one color way! It's a choice between the black/bright and the black/tan. Use a sharp blade when cutting fabric.

  106. I'm not normally a brown liker, but the brown and tan colorway draws my eye the most, use the right ruler for the right job is my best quilting tip.. it doesn;t pay to fight with the wrong ruler when cutting

    ReplyDelete
  107. Great block my tip is to use the same machine when doing a big project or if not always check the 1/4 inch measurement

    ReplyDelete
  108. Hi, this is Diane from Quiltmaker. Great post! Love all your design options. Thanks so much for participating with us. And to everyone who is blog hopping with us, I hope you'll enjoy the week. Happy quilting always!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Always close your rotary cutter blade! Very important tip that sometimes is neglected. Thanks for the block. And thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  110. I like the second version with the black background. It makes the bright colors pop. I put the binding on my quilts BEFORE quilting the outer border. It keeps the outer edge straight.

    ReplyDelete
  111. All of the color ways are beautiful, but I prefer the black and tan one. I make my own spray starch (and I use a lot of it) by mixing 1 TBSP of cornstarch with 1 cup of water and put it in a spray bottle. Thanks!

Please click on the delaineelliott above for my email link.

  112. I like the slightly patriotic one--my favorite tip is buying a little extra yardage when purchasing fabric for a project and using it to make your own precuts-( a 2 1/2 in strip perhaps, for a jelly roll or an extra 5 0r 10 inches to make charms or stacks-- and eventually collect enough different colors for another project later!

  113. I like the slightly patriotic one--my favorite tip is buying a little extra yardage when purchasing fabric for a project and using it to make your own precuts--(a 2 1/2 in strip perhaps for a jelly roll or an extra 5 or 10 inches to make charms or stacks)--and eventually collect enough different colors for another project later! 114. I surprisingly like the more modern looking one. Always double check your quarter inch. I don't use the markings on my throat plates, they are always off a smidge no matter which manufacturer

    ReplyDelete
  115. I love the quilt with the black background. The blocks really pop! My tip is from a friend - if washing and drying fabric, add a microfiber cloth to the dryer. It catches all the stray threads!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I like the raspberry and lemon on black background. Reminds me of dropping a starburst candy on a blacktopped road. My quilting tip is reusing the oil change reminder clings from the car windshield to mark my rotary ruler with the measurements I use constantly.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I love the bright colors on white. My quilting tip is when paper piecing use an eyebrow trimmer as a seam ripper. They work great.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Love the bright colors with white background. Keep your seam ripper handy and sharp so buy yourself a new one often as my mama always said to me, "if you don't like to rip it out, then you shouldn't be sewing."

    ReplyDelete
  119. Measure TWICE and cut once. ;) I love your block! Congratulations for having your block in the magazine!

    ReplyDelete
  120. I see so many possibilities with your block! My tip: stabilize your rulers! Use whatever you want (sandpaper, etc.), but make sure your rulers don't move unless you want them to.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I love the patriotic color block. If working fabrics that are cut on the diagonal be sure to starch first. Helps to keep them from stretching.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I like the reproductions print block. My tip is to attach your label before putting your binding on. Sew the raw seam in with your binding seam. It makes it harder for the label to come loose.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I like the black and tan or the green and gray....but the center really pops on the patriotic one. If you snip a couple threads on the back of your 4 patch, right in the center, it will lay flat and you won't have the bump.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I love the Blue and Green set. Always double check your figures before cutting. If your numbers are off, so are your pieces and nothing fits right.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I like the dark blue background with bright colors!
my favorite little notion: use the blue silicone thermal thimbles to help you press open all your HST. if you're doing a ton at once, your fingers can get hot. these babies will help to keep them from burning.

  126. I like the very first one pictured, white background.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I really like the soft, modern look.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I like the first one best, I am always drawn to color.
I have a 'practice" quilt that I am using for machine quilting, that I am gradually getting quilted, as I warm up for my 'real' quilts, trying out thread colors, and quilting patterns. It won't win any contests, but it will be fun, with lots of various designs, and keeps me from throwing out my little muslin squares.

  129. Lovely block. I am drawn to the original with the dark background. I am really not sure why. I have just discovered the joy of glue basting. I may have to buy stock in the company!

  130. The instructor in my first quilting class drilled this into us. "Measure twice, cut once!" I've never forgotten it.

  131. Beautiful! I can't decide between the black background and the patriotic.

  132. Loved the soft modern look and feel. Is this a difficult block to make, looks a bit intriguing.

  133. Beautiful block! Love the black/tan/beige version.
    Favorite quilting tip--cut accurately!!

  134. I'm liking both bright blocks; can't decide between dark/light backgrounds!

I really like the leaders/enders concept from Bonnie Hunter. Also her Scrap Users System, so green.

    thanks

  135. I like the pink, yellow on the gray (black) background. Favorite quilting tip is not mine, but one I use often - glue to hold down binding for stitching.

  136. I like the original block and the patriotic one - between these two I don't have a favorite.
My tip - iron, iron and iron again - Iron before you cut, iron after you cut (and maybe starch) and iron after a seam is sewn (both sides then iron the seam to one side).

  138. I like the first version. My favorite tip is to use sharp needles when sewing. I tend to forget this myself!

  139. I like the red and blue batik version. I don't know if I'd call it a tip, but when making half square triangles, instead of drawing a line, sewing either side, then lining up again to cut, I just cut the first time. It saves a lot of time and it's easier for me to sew as my presser foot has a guide on it.

  144. I would love to see this block in purple and teal. My favorite quilting tip is to enjoy the process and not worry about perfection or what others think. funnylady93@NYC.RR.COM

  145. Thanks for designing such a fun block! I like the first, bright pink & yellow on white background - it has such a happy, summery feel to it! Quilting tip - I use a lint roller all the time to pick up all of the tiny threads and pieces off of my cutting board and ironing board so that none get left behind and stuck in the project.

  146. I like both because I love color. Thank you for the giveaway.

  147. My favorite version is the yellow and pink. Maybe because it's Spring? Measure, measure, then measure again. Step back, look at the big picture. And measure again.

  148. I like the first one with the white background and the table runner made with it.

  149. I like both the patriotic block and the black and tan block the best. It would be hard to pick one over the other. My favorite quilting tip would be to just enjoy the process. Pick something new to do - even if it makes you nervous. You may just find out your new best thing to do.
