fine point and the line comes out just the right skinny width. Using a regular No. 2 pencil is tricky
because the line usually ends up being too wide. You will be using this line as a stitch line

Throughout the year, I make quilts for a variety of publications. It's a good bet that I hardly remember when a project is actually published because of the lead time. So, I may be making a quilt in March for publication in October! Or making a winter quilt in the middle of summer. It can get really confusing!

But, sometimes, it can be utterly wonderful when several projects are published or become current at the same time! So, in this post, I give you a mini-quilt show of several of my current projects!

If you have received your Fons and Porter Love of Quilting November/December 2017 issue, you may have seen Cornerstone.
Cornerstone is a lap size quilt that was pretty easy to assemble despite how complex it looks!

By the way, here's a picture of Hillside Harmony from Quilting Quickly September/October 2017 issue.
Hillside Harmony is a scrappy quilt that I had a lot of fun designing. I just love how the yellows and reds pop against the blue and green background fabrics.

I have single patterns available right now through Annie's Catalog. One of them is Christmas Cookies, a lap size quilt that Annie's Catalog is offering as an Exclusively Annie's Quilt Design.
City View was published with complete AccuQuilt die-cutting instructions. It was so easy and fast to use my fabric cutter to cut the pieces for this project. I confess, I use my AccuQuilt fabric cutter more and more these days. The cutting just goes so much faster and, with the accurate shapes, the piecing is just so much easier!

Speaking of which, also check out my project tutorials on the AccuQuilt Blog! The latest is a pattern for a Christmas Bell Pull! I used silk, wool and cottons and I added some beading for that extra bling!
The first, "Orange You Sweet?", is in the Love of Quilting September/October 2017 issue and is also available as a kit or a pattern.

The quilt is made with fabrics from the Bleecker Street and Harmony Collections from Quilting Treasures and wonderfully machine quilted by Anne Cowan.

I was also invited to appear in the second episode of the current 3000 TV Series! It was quite a thrill to do the filming - it was my first time to film a tutorial and, to get comfortable, I just did my best to imagine all my quilter friends and students behind the cameras! Everyone was so friendly and fabulous. I can't thank Vanessa, Diane, Colleen and Sara enough for their patience in guiding a newbie through this process!

You can contact your local PBS station to find out if and when they are airing the Fons and Porter Love of Quilting TV Series or you can get the DVD of each season. I saw some of the other projects in the 3000 series and I am in awe! It's well worth getting the DVD.

A second project, "Hillside Harmony", appears in Quilting Quickly September/October 2017 issue. It is made with fabrics from the Harmony Collection from Quilting Treasures. More on this in a future blog. In the meantime, here are both quilts with the magazines and the TV series DVD with Mini, my cat, enjoying them!
Truthfully, Mini just wanted to get in any picture I was taking that day! Cats have minds of their own!
But, here's the latest news. Last week, I did an AccuQuilt demo at our local guild, County Line Quilters. It was a wonderful experience! AccuQuilt provided a prize package consisting of a GO! fabric cutter, a GO! Qube and a strip die.

It was TO DIE FOR! The winner would only need to "add fabric" and for us quilters, you know that's really not a hard thing to do. Drawing the winner's name was the very last thing we did that evening and Pat K., who really wanted it, actually won the prize package. So, it went to a great home! Congratulations, Pat!

This week, the 2017 Row by Row Experience began. At our local quilt shop, The Round Bobbin (in Ambler, PA), everyone has been busy sewing the samples and putting kits together. "From Sea to Shining Sea" is the shop row and you can check it out on Facebook! Here's a sneak peak!
Family events this past spring finally inspired my project. I have three sisters (including another Susan!) who I do not see often. It's even harder for us to all get together in one place at one time. So, the blog tutorial this month is a "portrait" of my sisters and I as Sunbonnet Sues! Check it out!
While I have written a lot of Block of the Month patterns, I don't recall ever writing a Mystery Quilt pattern before! It was quite an adventure. I am inspired and in awe of the quilt designers who regularly come up with Mystery Quilts. Debbie Caffrey comes to mind! Phew!

I pulled my friend, Joyce Overberger, into it by having her make one of the samples (there are three!) in the traditional colors that she loves.

On another note, check out this small quilt I made for the guild raffle.

I had a lot of fun playing with the parallelogram die in my GO! Qube 8" Mix and Match Block!
It's hard to believe but I found myself with doing maybe half an hour of sewing in all that time! I logged in lots and lots of digital sewing, however, putting my EQ7 to work!

One of the first projects I picked up this month - when I finally had time to sew - is the Sweet Hearts Quilt. Read all about it on the AccuQuilt Blog.

I really enjoyed making it especially since AccuQuilt makes cutting those triangles so perfectly easy and precise. I love that the dog ears are removed, right at the start. I love that I can piece quarter square triangles together for the border and they come out the perfect size! I love that I didn't have to spend much time cutting and subcutting. Can you tell I love my AccuQuilt GO! Fabric Cutter???

Last year (before my little sewing hiatus), I made Prismatic from a couple of Northcott's Sandscapes jelly rolls and it is now available as an Exclusively Annie's quilt pattern from Annie's Catalog.
One of my quilts, Sunspots, also managed to land on the cover of a book, Bargello Quilts and Beyond!
It was a lot of fun and easy to make, using non-traditional bargello methods. So fun and easy, I used the same methods to come up with Robin's Egg Blue, which is also in the same book.

Doesn't it remind you of southwestern turquoise and silver jewelry? I hope it does for that was my inspiration for it! Anyway, I can visualize this quilt in dramatic red, white and black, too.

For now, I have one more project to share with you - my Bollenvelden table runner that appears in Quilter's World Magazine Spring 2016 issue. Google assures me that "Bollenvelden" is Dutch for tulip fields and that's exactly what I was going for in this quilt.
Christmas is just around the corner! Yes, I know it's not even Halloween yet but, still, Christmas is barely 2 months away. That's 62 days. Phew! Time to get those holiday projects going....

So, are you ready for a quick project? AccuQuilt has a fabulous die that makes 3 different 7" snowflakes! I used it, as well as the 8" Circle die (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!) to come up with Ornament Hot Pads!

I recently made Pillows for AccuQuilt using their new GO! The Churn Dash block is one of my favorites. It's one of the few blocks that I've made over and over again. Here are just a couple of my projects - both named after the alternative block name, Double Monkey Wrench. It's still the Churn Dash!
It is an exciting shop hop event where you can visit participating shops and receive a free pattern for a quilt row. Collect at least 8 row patterns, make a quilt and show-and-tell at a participating shop and you could win prizes! There are over 2700 participating shops from all 50 states and Canada with 107 shops in my home state of Pennsylvania. Just amazing!

This year is the third year that our local quilt shop, The Round Bobbin is participating in this event. Every year, I have had the privilege of designing the row for The Round Bobbin. So, with an event theme of H2O (water!), our row for the The Round Bobbin is the Storm At Sea!

It is a paper-pieced pattern as the pieces do get a bit small. Susan S., the shop owner, put the row together and Susan A. machine quilted fish on it! So wonderful! It looks great even as a stand-alone row (think table runner!). You just have to come and see it!!!

Our Fabric plate this year is - Bobbin Along! I accidentally came up with it during a group discussion.

So, if you're in Ambler, Pennsylvania this summer (June 21-Sept 8), drop by the Round Bobbin, pick up your free row pattern and maybe throw in a kit and a fabric plate! Coincidentally, not only do I currently have an iron with a dirty sole, I also had just bought a pack of Mr Clean Magic Eraser! It is listed on page 36 as Block 1049. This is only the second time I've submitted a block and also the second time I've participated in this blog hop! So exciting! It's also a bit nerve-wracking to be on the Hop on the very first day!! But, here we go....

I thought it would be fun to see what this block would look like in different fabrics. So, the first thing I did is to change the background to dramatic black!

Those bright colors really become brighter on a black background, don't they?

Next, I wanted to see it with reproductions. Here's a black and tan version that looks like it was made in 1890!

Are you loving a particular version yet? How about a soft modern look?

Did you notice I changed the value placement in the soft modern version? It makes the diagonals look more prominent.

Last but not the least, here is a traditional version that's just a touch patriotic. I did several things different about this block. First, I mixed batiks and regular cottons. I have been doing that more and more these days. You can, too! The quilt police won't come after you for mixing them up. I promise! Second, the color for the arcs and the circle in contrast to the red/blue really pops those arcs and circle. Finally, I just love the transparency between the red and the blue in this one. These 3 fabrics just blend and transition so well!

Making the blocks in different colorways is one thing. But, really, how would they look in a quilt?

So, I designed a 30" square wallhanging with a special sashing strip that creates a secondary pattern for a more cohesive look. Check out the different looks:

You will find a link at the top of this blog (and on the right-hand side column) for quick directions to make the quilt above - especially those sashing strips. However, these directions are intended for the more experienced quilter who knows how to make flying geese units, hour glass units and make circle appliques. You can substitute a yo-yo for the circle applique, by the way.

Just one more - here's Echo in a table runner.
I'm excited to show you "Surf and Sand". This is a bed-size block of the month program I created for Quilting Treasures featuring their new and fabulous blender collection, Color Blends.

It's in two colorways - Surf (cool colors) and Sand (warm). I will admit to liking the Surf version a little bit more than Sand!

The best part about this project, I feel, are the "Arcs" which makes the blocks look like they are circles! They're actually very straightforward to do with a little bit of applique and I feel that a confident beginner can make this quilt easily. Of course, if you would rather not do any type of applique at all, it is easy enough to skip the Arcs.

If you're interested in doing this program, please contact your local quilt shop to see if they're offering it. The Round Bobbin Quilt Shop does offer the program in both colorways.
I'm pretty sure you have several someones - as do I. From those who passed away from breast cancer like my cousin's wife who had a lifelong battle with it and like a fellow guild member who generously willed her stash to the guild, to several friends and acquaintances who have battled (and continue to battle) and survived it, these women inspire and amaze us with their strength, courage and resilience.
It's basically a popularity contest so I need votes! But, the neat thing about is that prizes are also awarded to your chosen guild (County Line Quilters in my case) and your chosen charity (Last Chance Ranch, a local animal rescue).

For security and fairness, AccuQuilt does require you to register your email. It's pretty easy to do!

You can vote once a day until May 27. So, please do! Here's the link to my entry:

It is "One Patch At A Time" - a challenge to make a One Patch Quilt. So, I combed the internet and my stash of projects and pictures for examples (and non-examples!) of one patch quilts for inspiration.

In 2000, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine came out with a very helpful article on One Patch quilt and they also published several one patch shapes! It was so exciting to find this article for not only does it include the templates, it includes some pictures of what the one patch shapes look like in a quilt. So, click on this link:

One Patch quilts are those that consist of one repeating shape. The one that comes to mind right away is the Apple Core.

I also find this baby blocks quilt fascinating. It's a tessellation quilt made with half-hexagons. And, it IS a One Patch Quilt.

By Terry Aske.

This next quilt is also a tessellation done with half-hexagons. But, because some of the setting pieces are full hexagons, it cannot be called a One Patch Quilt.

As a rule, only some tessellation quilts may be considered one patch quilts.

Check out my "A Thimble Full" quilt. While a One Patch Shape is used - the Tumbler, this quilt cannot be considered a One Patch Quilt. The multi-color tumbler consists of fabric squares and the rows are separated by sashing. Both of these fail to make this a One Patch Quilt.

Change it to one fabric per tumbler and eliminate the sashing and, voila!, it becomes a One Patch Quilt!

However, there is another Cracker block which is a One Patch Shape. It looks like a rectangle with wavy sides.
A great resource for One Patch Quilts is
Quilt Teacher/Author/Celebrity Pat Yamin.

This cracker quilt is her sample and she offers templates to make One Patch Quilts including the Cracker acrylic template.

A simply stunning One Patch Quilt is the Spinning Star. There is so much movement to this curvy shape. Does it not look like an Apple Core that has been stretched on the bias?

Another resource to check out is Ardco Templates. They offer metal templates for a variety of quilt shapes. The links I have included are for their Charm Templates and their Single Shapes pages as these are where most of the One Patch Shapes are listed.

This brings us to Charm Quilts. A Charm Quilt is one where no fabric is repeated except maybe for the background or setting. It does not have to be a One Patch Quilt though a lot of Charm Quilts are.

So many other One Patch Quilts out there. I may have to revisit this in the future!

Look a little closer - doesn't that look like a quilt design? I just keep obsessing about all those diamonds with pinwheels and triangle shapes! I want to make this quilt now. Think Kaffe prints especially for the reds. Yummy!

Canberra Quilters (Australia) also noticed the same thing and did a little research. The designs are apparently intended to show Russian arts and crafts.
Well, I got a little more curious and did a bit more googling. Next thing I found out is that the U.S. Snowboarding Team's official jacket is basically a patchwork created by Burton Snowboards. It is inspired by handcrafted patchwork quilts and the American flag. It seems that snowboarders really love it, too! Who knew quilting and snowboarding would ever mix?!

Here's a picture of gold medalist Sage Kotsenburg wearing the jacket and below is Shaun White with both the jacket and the bib!
I'm fiddling around here to share more quilts with you. The latest are a bunch of my free quilt patterns that are listed under the "Free Stuff" tab above. They are in PDF so you can easily download them.

Speaking of free quilt patterns, here's a shoutout to Ebony Love of lovebugstudios.com for doing the Downton Abbey Mystery Quilt Along! You're awesome, Ebony! What an undertaking!

Anyway, if you haven't registered yet, you still have time to get the free weekly patterns to create your very own Downton Abbey quilt! Come January 12, 2014, the Mystery will be totally solved and Ebony will no longer offer the pattern for free.

My Downton Abbey quilt will be a scrappier version of the Edith quilt kit. It's got a lot of peach and some pink and green. The original Edith also had purple and blue. I'm still adding and removing fabrics to my version and I have yet to get started on the sewing! I'll post a picture of my fabrics soon.

If you need Downton Abbey Fabrics, the Round Bobbin Quilt Shop will have the complete line at some point. Though, right now, they are missing several bolts just like everyone else. Downton Abbey is just so popular!
So, this is just a reminder to consider alternative gifts this year. For instance, November 24 is Small Business Saturday. Why not visit a small business near you and spend your money there? You would be supporting not only that small business but also your local community.

Actually, why not visit a small business throughout the year? As quilters, we already do this everytime we go into a local quilt shop and buy something. Why not take it a step farther and visit locally-owned restaurants and one-of-a-kind stores? I have tasted some of the best food from these local restaurants and found some of the best gifts at local stores.

And, gifts can be in form of services. Maybe pay for someone's newspaper subscription or maybe get a gift card to the hairdresser. These sentiments are exactly those expressed in an editorial letter by a Mr. Psalmond that appeared in the Moultrie (GA) Observer a year ago.
In just a few short days, we've received such a great response. At the CLQ guild meeting last night, there were so many donations that I could barely take all of them in my car. Good thing there were lots of clothes and quilts/blankets so we were able to squish them all in!
Thanks so much to Lisa from Kentucky who has gone out of her way to donate to this drive. Your family's generosity is much appreciated and very awesome.

In the last few days, I have seen more and more calls for donations. Here are a few:

American Quilter Society/Project Linus - asking for twin to queen sized quilts.
Details are at here.

Bumble Beans Basics - a NYC based quilter who has organized a quilt drive.

The Round Bobbin Quilt Shop, is still accepting donations in the Philadelphia area as well.

Again, thanks so much for all the donations.
